Smart Ways to Give (With Tax Advantages!)
Donation “Bunching”
Starting in 2026, a new 0.05% floor for charitable deductions will take effect. That means 2025 is a strategic year to give. Talk to your accountant about “bunching” donations into a Donor Advised Fund (DAF) — a simple way to receive an immediate tax deduction while supporting charities over time. The Winona Community Foundation offers donor advised funds and opening a DAF is a simple process.
Appreciated Stock
If the stock market has been kind to you this year, consider donating appreciated stock. You’ll avoid capital gains tax and your chosen charity receives the full value of your gift. The Winona Community Foundation is set up to receive stock easily for either community funds or your donor advised fund.
Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs)
If you’re 70½ or older, you can make QCDs directly from your IRA to nonprofits. This allows you to give pre-tax dollars, maximizing your impact while reducing taxable income. QCD’s cannot be donated into a donor advised fund. But here at the Foundation, we have a variety of community funds that can accept a QCD (community funds listed below).
