With the Winona Community Foundation’s support, the Impact Center used their Cycle 1 2024 $7,500 grant dollars to purchase equipment needed to support the free after-school program that provides a safe space for children to do homework and engage in activities.
The first project was creating a functional kitchen space. Norman’s Electric got the power flowing in May 2024, and by September, a new electric range from Volkmann Appliance was installed and immediately put to work, nourishing the young minds they serve.
Securing reliable transportation was a significant hurdle, but thanks to the remaining grant funds contributing to the down payment, a 2022 Chevy Express 15-passenger van became a reality on February 21, 2025. This van is already bridging gaps for children who lack transportation.
The Impact Center program currently serves 71 students, a vibrant group where approximately 75% identify as a minority race and about 90% come from low-income households. By offering their program at no cost, they directly reach these demographics, providing crucial support to at-risk youth in Winona.
The joy of having a proper kitchen, where shared meals foster connection, and the freedom the van provides in reaching the children and families they serve, have been transformative. This funding from the WCF has propelled their organization forward, allowing them to deepen their impact on Winona’s youth.
