John and Margaret Cross Memorial Fund of the Winona Community Foundation Benefits Homeless Day Shelter
Kevin Cross and Carolyn Cross deMatta, co-fund advisors to the John and Margaret Cross Memorial Fund, directed a $21,000 grant to fund the Catholic Charities Drop-In Day Center. Cross and deMatta are the children of John and Margaret Cross and although neither live in Winona, they stay current on the needs in Winona through their relationship with the Winona Community Foundation and were inspired to make this gift after learning about the need through the Foundation.
Their gift is making it possible for Catholic Charities to extend its new drop-in day shelter hours. Now anyone needing a warm, safe place to stay during the day can drop in any time between 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., seven days a week through March 31. An earlier grant of $34,000 from the Winona Community Foundation’s COVID-19 Relief Fund allowed the center to open from noon to 7 p.m.
“Catholic Charities was extremely grateful and fortunate to have found an ally in the WCF. The needs of our community are at the forefront of both of our organizations, and this funding has really brought that to light,” shares Audrey Rivenburg, Director of Housing at Catholic Charities of Southern Minnesota.
