Founded in 2000, Miller Mentoring is a local school-based mentoring program that offers individual and group mentoring for students grades 5-12 attending Winona Area Public Schools. The program fosters positive social, emotional and intellectual growth in students with the goal of cultivating appropriate social interactions, emotional maturity, improved self-confidence, and academic success. In 2023, Miller Mentoring received a $6,000 Cycle 2 community grant from the Winona Community Foundation to grow their program by training more mentors and increasing its capacity for community-based events.

With this help of this grant, the program increased its impact in several ways, including:

  • Bringing in community leaders to speak to students

  • Providing community service learning opportunities along with visits to college campuses. Through these opportunities, students were able to gain confidence and exposure to more of what the Winona community has to offer as they transition from student to community member.

  • Developing the Winhawk Warrior program, which encourages aspiring educators to serve mentees for the duration of their academic career at WSU. This increased the number of mentors available to work one-on-one with students.

  • The ability to provide caps and gowns for the program’s graduating high school seniors for those unable to afford them.

“We are grateful for WCF and their support. It is a comfort to know that we have such a wonderful community that is available to support our mission and field questions as we continue the important work of Miller Mentoring in this ever-changing world.” Betsy Wells, Miller Mentoring Program Manager

Miller Mentoring serves students of diverse backgrounds at Winona Area Public Schools in grades 5-12. Students in the program are referred for social, emotional or academic needs. An important part of the Winona Community Foundation’s mission is realized though awarding community grants to meet the ever-changing needs of the community. Funding for this program comes from generous people, like you, who invest in the community and the Foundation. Whether through direct donations, establishing endowments, or holding charitable funds at the Foundation, these diverse sources of funding are instrumental in supporting the community grant program. As a result, local nonprofits in the Winona area greatly benefit from this program, which has become an essential asset in meeting the needs of the community.
