Supporting charitable work right here in Winona
There are many campaigns out there about shopping locally, shopping small, etc. This message is important because supporting local businesses has an economic impact that affects many areas (employment, taxes, giving, etc.). For those of us that might be thinking “we don’t need anything” or find someone on your holiday shopping list is difficult to find a gift for, perhaps giving locally should be on your gifting list as well! Plus, the benefits of giving locally are personal and profound. With so many great charities and people (or animals) in need, it’s a great time to give back to those less fortunate or to causes that give so much to you throughout the year!
Here are just a few of the many ways to give locally this holiday season:
A Gift in Honor
Instead of buying something for the person who doesn’t want or need anything, giving a donation to a charity in their honor would be a lovely way of celebrating that person. One could wrap up the receipt letter and give it to that person at a holiday celebration. Many people would be tickled pink if a donation was given in their honor.
A Gift in Memory
The holiday season is also a great time to honor someone who has passed away. Perhaps you knew someone who always volunteered at their church or loved children. A donation could be given to a charity with a note of tribute. Many organizations will publish this information, and the donor will feel warm and fuzzy knowing they are celebrating the memory of a loved one.
Charity Exchange
Instead of doing a traditional gift exchange, have family for friends contribute to a “pot” of money and write down a charity or cause of their choice. If you play games during the holiday, the winner could determine whose charity “wins” the money. An easy and fun activity at a gathering!
Local Resources
Perhaps you want to give to local charities, but you don’t have a particular passion or don’t know where to find a legitimate non-profit. Most communities will have a nonprofit directory provided by a community foundation – and Winona is no exception. Click on any nonprofit logo to learn more and visit their website:
Whatever cause is near and dear to your heart, we’re here to help you make the most of your giving!
